Electrical Installation: The Basics

Electricity is a basic necessity in the modern world. It powers our homes, our businesses, and our society as a whole. But few of us understand how it all works. In this article, we will explore the basics of electrical installation. We will cover the different types of electrical installation works, and the different types of electrical installation certificates. So read on, and learn everything you need to know about electrical installation.

Firstly, What Makes a Good Electrical Installation?

All of the fixed electrical equipment that comes through the electricity metre is referred to as an electrical installation. It includes cables that are generally hidden in walls and ceilings, accessories (such as sockets, switches, and light fittings), and the consumer unit (fusebox) that houses all the fuses, circuit-breakers, and residual current devices (RCDs).

There are numerous factors that contribute to a good electrical installation:

  • To reduce the usage of multiway socket adapters and trailing leads, there are enough sockets for electrical appliances.
  • Covers are in place to prevent fingers from coming into contact with live components (failed or damaged switches should be replaced as soon as possible).
  • An RCD protection system is used to provide further protection against electrical shock.
  • Earthing arrangements are in place to ensure that a fuse or circuit breaker can swiftly clear an electrical fault before it causes an electric shock or fire.
  • Satisfactory protective bonding arrangements are in place where necessary (to minimise any electric shock hazard until a fault is repaired)
  • In the event of a fault, there are enough circuits installed to prevent harm and inconvenience.
  • In relation to the fuse or circuit breaker protecting the circuit, the cables are correctly chosen and installed.

What are Types of Electrical Installation Work?

There are three main types of electrical installation work:

  • New installations – this is where an electrical installation is installed in a new property.
  • Extensions, alterations, and additions to an existing installation – this is where changes are made to an existing electrical installation.
  • Repairs to an existing installation – this is where damage or deterioration to an electrical installation is repaired.

What are Types of Electrical Installation Certificates?

There are two main types:

Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)

This sort of accreditation verifies that a certain electrical installation is safe to use. When any important electrical installations are made, an EIC is generated. Fitting new lights, circuits, and other specialist work, for example.

Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC):

An EIC is required for any significant electrical installation, but an MEIWC is all that’s needed for minor and non-intrusive work. This type of accreditation will be provided when circuits are updated or added in non-specialist spaces. An MEIWC verifies that an electrical system is safe to use and meets all current rules in the same way that a regular EIC does.

It’s critical for property owners to obtain these certifications whenever any electrical installation work is done on a property. You’ll be risking hefty fines from authorities if something goes wrong. And, in the case of an electrical fire, not having the right certificate could invalidate your insurance policy.
